Nazareth Calvinistic Methodist Church - Welsh
Llwynhendy

Originally, the Calvinistic Methodists of Bynea held their prayer meetings at the home of Sarah Owen, Ty Newydd, near Bynea Station. Over the years the small flock grew and decided to build their own chapel. Work was started in 1865 and finished in 1866. The building could seat 350 and the vestry which was underneath the chapel, could accommodate about 200.
The Llanelly Guardian reported on 5 April 1866 that the opening services of the new and compact Calvinistic Methodist meeting place of worship were held on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday when excellent sermons were delivered. Exhibiting brotherly love in word and deed, Services were also held at Bryn Independent Chapel and Soar Baptist Chapel where praiseworthy collections were made at both places towards the Nazareth Building Fund. The cost of Nazareth Chapel, vestry room etc., was estimated to be £600 and at the close of the services the handsome sum of £300 had been collected.
When the chapel opened there were 30 members but the numbers soon grew and within three years Nazareth accepted the Revd David Lewis as their first minister. The spiritual revival of 1904 affected the local chapels and by 1911 it was obvious that the chapel was too small for the growing congregation.
The war years of 1914-18 halted progress but by 1920 plans were made to build a new chapel. The members had raised £2,000 and the contract for building the new chapel was given to Isaac Jones of Llanelli. The chapel cost £5,000 and during the monthly meeting in February 1927 six foundation stones were laid. The opening service of the new Nazarethchapel was held on Saturday 5 November 1927.
