Sponsored by Capel Newydd to cater for the English-speaking members.
In the early days, as today, there were both Welsh and English-speaking Methodists who did not always take the same approach to their faith. In Wales, generally, the Welsh Methodists followed George Whitefield, a Welsh-speaking Calvinistic Methodist of the Presbyterian Church who is said to have inspired John Wesley. Many of the English-speaking Methodists, on the other hand, followed John Wesley’s style of Methodism.
Although the approach to their faith was different both George Whitefield and John Wesley are said to have respected each other.
One of the founder members of the Presbyterian Church was local businessman, David Evans, a Liberal and Nonconformist, who purchased Llangennech Park, former home of Richard Janion Nevill. David Evans was also the older brother of Gwilym Evans, the pharmaceutical chemist who produced the world famous ‘Quinine Bitters’.
Gwilym Evans purchased Westfa Mansion, former home of Charles William Nevill, son of Richard Janion Nevill.
