Siloh Calvinistic Methodist Church - Welsh
Lakefield Road

A very ornate chapel, it opened in May 1877. Within a year of the foundation stone being laid, the chapel was described as being ‘one of the most elegant and artistic edifices in the town.’ Its architecture was said to be English Classical but favouring the Corinthian order. Inside was an impressive lighting feature which was a central brass coronet with 12 branches, each holding three lights. Every seat had a patent umbrella holder, which was ‘a new thing for Llanelly’, and every window was provided with a Bullock’s patent ventilator. Built with accommodation for 800 people, during the opening services, the congregation spilled into the aisles, the gallery stairs and the steps leading up to the pulpit. The collection raised £200, which was no mean sum considering the financial constraints of the time.
When it was preparing for its centenary Siloh was forced to close and during 1980, Llanelli Town Council, who had a policy of converting religious properties which had outlived their time, acquired the property which it subsequently converted into Lakefield Youth and Community Centre.
