The second Llanelli Festival, held on Saturday 20th August at the Selwyn Samuel Centre, was an extravaganza of all that is good about Llanelli. Although the weather was wet and miserable outside the atmosphere inside the Bowls Hall was sunny and warm. Everyone was determined to make this year more successful than last year.
Shortly after 8.30 a.m. people started to arrive and began setting up their exhibitions, displays, stands and stalls. There was an air of excitement and the hall was buzzing with anticipation. Around 10.00 a.m. the Salvation Army Band struck-up putting everyone in festive mood before the official opening at 11.00 a.m. Dignitaries from Carmarthenshire County Council, Llanelli Town Council and Llanelli Rural Council, spoke to those gathered to listen to what they had to say and praised all those who were taking part showing what a great town Llanelli is. Nia Griffith officially opened the Festival at 11.00 a.m. and the fun began.
Cor Curiad, with their Musical Director, Alex Esney-Davies, delighted everyone with their musical renditions. They were raising funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust and the Festival organisers wish them every success. Following Cor Curiad, Councillor Gwynne Wooldridge launched the Heritage 6 Project from the Llanelli Library display. Then Prince Prince Nadin, internationally acclaimed illusionist extraordinaire and magician, award winner in Vancouver and St Petersburg, Russia, who has raised thousands of pounds for charity showed why he deserves his title. He enthralled young and not so young alike with his magic. Prince Nadin was followed by Joanne who delighted the younger visitors with her story-telling entitled ‘Waiting for Snow’.
Unfortunately, the girl group ‘Charmed’ were unable to attend but young, talented, vocalist Emma Bennett stepped in at the last minute and amazed everyone with her beautiful singing. We wish her every success. At 1.00 p.m. the Llanelli & District Guide Dogs Association put their guide dogs through their paces and showed what can be achieved through training. Joanne Yeo entertained the younger visitors again with her story-telling and young and old were entertained by Emma Bennett and her lovely voice. Then, everyone began tapping their feet and some even took to ‘bopping’ in the aisles, reliving their teenage years, as the British Legion sprang into action. Their ‘swing’ music was a hit with everyone and the Selwyn Samuel Centre resounded with their foot-tapping music. To end the afternoon entertainment, Prince Nadin amazed everyone again as they tried to work out how he did it.
The afternoon finally came to an end when the raffle was drawn and many winners left carrying their prizes with them. All too soon the Festival had come to an end but everyone agreed it was a great day and well attended even though there were other events such as the Railway Riots Commemorations and the international rugby match.
The organisers would like to thank all those who took part, St Paul’s Family Centre who kept the younger visitors amused at their stand, the entertainers for giving their time so freely, John Williams, the treasurer of the Llanelli Historical Society and Joyce Mollet, the secretary of the Society who acted as compères. A special thanks goes to Dave Tucker, member of the British Legion Band, who provided and set-up the sound system.
