Acts of Incorporation, 1807 & 1818
Alexander Raby junior, son of Alexander Raby senior and his wife Anne (nee Cox) was born at Cobham, Surrey in 1778. When the family moved to Llanelli he lived at Furnace House later known as ‘The Dell’.
In February 1809 Alexander junior married into a local gentry family when he wedded Jane, the second daughter of the late John Rees of Cilymaenllwyd (1749-1802) and the sister of John Rees of Cilymaenllwyd (1781-1843) who was known as Captain John Rees.
Alexander and Jane settled at Brynmor House (situated where the Stradey Park Hotel stands today) and close to Furnace House where his father lived. Alexander junior did not follow his father into the iron and coal industries but concentrated on shipping.
He became an active member of the Harbour Trust and one of the Trustees to the Burgesses.
In June 1843 Alexander junior and Jane's daughter Helena Elizabeth of Brynmor, Llanelli, married David Lewis of Bank House, Llandeilo.
In August 1848 Helena Eliza married Alfred Watney of Gwendraeth, Carmarthenshire.
The 1851 census shows Helena Eliza as aged 26 and living at Coalbrook House, Pontyberem, with her husband Alfred Watney also aged 26, and described as Iron & Coal Merchant from Wandsworth, London. They had a daughter Edith Helena aged 3 and a baby son Alfred Watney and three servants to attend to them.
In April 1856 Alexander Raby junior of Brynmor House died at the age of 78 and his wife Jane died on 6 March 1858 in London.
In the Cambrian Death Notices Jane Raby was described as ‘Widow of the late Alexander Raby of Llanelly’.
On 2 July 1868 Edith H Watney, daughter of Helena Eliza and Alfred Watney, married the Reverend Thomas Harvey at Battersea. Edith was the granddaughter of Alexander and Jane Raby and great granddaughter of Alexander Raby senior.
Trade Directory entries confirm that Alexander Raby junior was involved in shipping.
