The Inn’s name reflects its connection with the Bres Colliery which was situated on the other side of Bres Road.

The Bres Arms, Clarence Inn and Double Dragon (previously known as the Raven Inn) are three public houses in Murray Street. that survived the town centre improvement scheme.

The Cricketers Arms, Queen Victoria Inn, Albion and Malabar did not survive and were demolished.
